Advances in Solar Energy is back on schedule. Volume III contains a number of interesting reviews of the different fields in solar energy conversion. We appreciate the many encouraging comments received after the second volume appeared and have incorporated some of the suggested changes. Even though most of the reviews are invited through our editors, we are always open to suggestion about subjects of importance that are ready for a com prehensive and critical review and have not been recently covered, or about potential authors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor John A. Duffie for his invaluable help in starting the Advances in Solar Energy series. Although he has recently taken full responsibility as editor-in-chief for the Solar Energy Journal, his continued assistance as a member of the Board of Editors is greatly appreciated. The diligent work of the many active editors is gratefully acknowledged and constitutes the basis for a valuable review periodical with outstanding contributions. The typesetting was done by Sandra Pruitt in the Delaware office, using the TEX-program with laser print-out. Her organization and patience in coordinating with the authors, and her technical skill and diligence in preparing the submitted copy permitted the timely and high-quality assembly of this production. We wish to commend her for efforts well beyond the call of duty. The accommodating help from Plenum Press and its production staff deserves our grateful acknowledgement.

Advances in Solar Heating and Cooling presents new information on the growing concerns about climate change, the security of energy supplies, and the ongoing interest in replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. The amount of energy used for heating and cooling is very significant, estimated, for example, as half of final energy consumption in Europe. Solar thermal installations have the potential to meet a large proportion of the heating and cooling needs of both buildings and industry and the number of solar thermal installations is increasing rapidly. This book provides an authoritative review of the latest research in solar heating and cooling technologies and applications. Provides researchers in academia and industry with an authoritative overview of heating and cooling for buildings and industry in one convenient volume Part III, ‘Solar cooling technologies’ is contributed by authors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is a world-leader in this area Covers advanced applications from zero-energy buildings, through industrial process heat to district heating and cooling

Advances in Solar Energy in its fourth year has almost become routine in identifying important fields that warrant comprehensive reports, in assembling its contents and in preparing the typeset version; the final r~sult is now in front of you for your judgement. In working with the authors to prepare attractive reviews, several of our referees and editors have helped with a great deal of their time and a wealth of suggestions and advice for further improvement. The subjects treated in the first four volumes covered many areas of the large field of solar energy conversion. The interested reader may anticipate missing subjects for following volumes or updates of earlier reviews in rapidly developing fields. As in earlier volumes, we invite your comments and suggestions for articles and authors who are eminently qualified to write such critical reviews. This Volume covers subjects in bioconversion, photovoltaics and, in three articles, subjects related to heat transfer to the ground. We hope to order the content of a Volume even more in the future, to give emphasis to a specific topic in solar energy conversion. We thereby try to indicate its different modes of application and to stimulate cross fertilization of related fields. My special thanks go to Ms. Sandra Pruitt and Ms. Patricia Porter-Revels for typesetting the manuscript in the Delaware Office, and to the University of Delaware for its support of the publications office. The accommodating help from Plenum Press and its production staff deserves our grateful acknowledgement.

After decades of research and development, concentrating solar thermal (CST) power plants (also known as concentrating solar power (CSP) and as Solar Thermal Electricity or STE systems) are now starting to be widely commercialized. Indeed, the IEA predicts that by 2050, with sufficient support over ten percent of global electricity could be produced by concentrating solar thermal power plants. However, CSP plants are just but one of the many possible applications of CST systems. Advances in Concentrating Solar Thermal Research and Technology provides detailed information on the latest advances in CST systems research and technology. It promotes a deep understanding of the challenges the different CST technologies are confronted with, of the research that is taking place worldwide to address those challenges, and of the impact that the innovation that this research is fostering could have on the emergence of new CST components and concepts. It is anticipated that these developments will substantially increase the cost-competiveness of commercial CST solutions and reshape the technological landscape of both CST technologies and the CST industry. After an introductory chapter, the next three parts of the book focus on key CST plant components, from mirrors and receivers to thermal storage. The final two parts of the book address operation and control and innovative CST system concepts. Contains authoritative reviews of CST research taking place around the world Discusses the impact this research is fostering on the emergence of new CST components and concepts that will substantially increase the cost-competitiveness of CST power Covers both major CST plant components and system-wide issues

This book contributes to understanding the development and application of green energy solutions. The term ""green energy"" is widely used today to indicate sustainable energy sources with zero or minimal environmental and economic impact, obtained from various renewable energy sources. The contents presented in this book deal with different solutions, from small-scale applications (thermoelectric energy harvesting) to energy efficiency in buildings with local renewable energy production (also in critical seismic sites), local energy systems (smart energy management of storage and complex interactions), exploitation of biomasses from agricultural wastes, and voluntary certifications associated with energy trading in large energy systems. These aspects mark a more sustainable evolution of the society with wider green energy usage.

The main objective of writing the three volume 'Advances in Solar Energy Technology' is to consolidate all the relevant latest information available in the field of solar energy (applied and theoretical in nature) and to as sist both the students ( i. e. undergraduate, postgraduate, research scholars etc.) and the professionals (i.e. consulting, design and contracting firms). I have discussed each and every topic in depth rather than a cursory overview. All the material required on a particular topic is included in the chapter and I have wherever possible given useful relationships in equation, graphical and tabular form. It is hoped that this completed Solar Energy Technol ogy will serve the best source material in this field. The first chapter deals with the evacuated tubular col lecors suitable to operate at a temperature of about 150°C with a daily energy collector efficiency in excess of 40 per cent. These collectors thus would be useful for efficient operation of Solar Airconditioning System, Power Generation and Process Heat System. Various advanced features like vacuum insulation, selective black coating, anti-reflective coating, heat pipe, cusp reflector, etc., used in designing this advanced type of collector are discussed separately in this chapter. Transient mathematical model for its perfor mance prediction and different designs of evacuated tubular collectors commercially produced in different countries of the world are described in brief to give the reader a good picture about their scopr and working.

This book reviews recent advanced research work in the area of flat plate collectors, solar distillation, greenhouse technology for crop drying and production and solar electric/ thermal (PV/T) systems. The basic working principle, energy balances, thermal modelling, energy and economic analysis will be discussed. An instantaneous and overall efficiency of each solar thermal and electric system are also discussed and their results compared for economic analysis. Basic knowledge of availability of solar radiation is discussed in the beginning. Life cycle cost analysis, which includes initial investment, operating cost, interest rate, salvage value and annual power output, has been considered. An energy pay back time (EPBT) for solar electric/ thermal (PV/T) system has been evaluated by evaluating embodied energy during production of solar cell, PV module and balance of system (BOS) and useful both electric and thermal energy. Thermal energy from PV module can be in the form of sensible heat either for water or for air heating system.
